Question 1

What does lifting chalk do?

Accepted Answer

Chalk absorbs moisture from your hands and increases friction between your skin and the bar. This gives you a more secure grip and helps prevent the bar from shifting or slipping during heavy sets.

Question 2

Why don't all gyms allow chalk?

Accepted Answer

Mainly because of the mess. Block and loose chalk creates dust that settles on equipment, floors, and mirrors — and not everyone cleans up after themselves. Many gyms allow liquid chalk as a compromise since it creates far less mess.

Question 3

Is liquid chalk as good as block chalk?

Accepted Answer

Most lifters consider block chalk to be slightly better, but liquid chalk is comparable and often the more practical choice. It's allowed in more gyms due to the lack of mess, and the grip difference is small enough that most people won't notice it in training.

Question 4

How much does chalk help with deadlifts?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how much your grip is limiting you. If your hands are sweaty and the bar is slipping, chalk can make a significant difference. If grip isn't your limiting factor, the effect will be minimal. Most lifters notice an immediate improvement in bar feel and security on heavy sets.
