Question 1

Is it better to deadlift in flat or lifting shoes?

Accepted Answer

For most lifters, flat shoes are the better choice. They keep you closer to the floor and maintain a more natural pulling position. Weightlifting shoes with an elevated heel change your mechanics in a way that works against most pulling styles.

Question 2

Should I deadlift in Converse?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they're a solid option. The flat, firm sole is well suited for deadlifting and there's a reason powerlifters have used them for decades. Just make sure you're getting the original All Star rather than one of the newer cushioned variants.

Question 3

Is it better to deadlift in socks or shoes?

Accepted Answer

Socks put you as close to the floor as possible and many lifters pull well that way. The main issue is that many gyms and competitions don't allow it. If yours does, it's a legitimate option, otherwise a flat shoe is the next best thing.

Question 4

Can I use the same shoes for squats and deadlifts?

Accepted Answer

Yes, depending on the shoe. Many people squat in flat shoes as well, and that's perfectly fine if your mobility allows it, though many prefer an elevated heel for squatting. You also want something with lateral support for squats.
