Question 1

Should you do compound or isolation exercises first?

Accepted Answer

Within a given movement pattern or muscle group, do the compound before the isolation. Don't pre-exhaust your chest with flyes before bench pressing. But that doesn't mean you can't bench, do some chest isolation work, then move to squats.

Question 2

Do compound exercises build muscle?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Compound exercises are effective for building muscle because they allow you to progressively load multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The squat, deadlift, bench press, and other compound movements have been used as the foundation of muscle-building programs for decades.

Question 3

Can you build muscle with compound exercises only?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for most people and most muscle groups. A program built around squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, row, and pull-up covers the major muscle groups effectively. Isolation exercises can be useful for targeting specific muscles that don't get enough stimulus from compound work alone, but they're not a requirement for building muscle.
